Best of FM: Caroline Hirons

May 23, 2025 Fat Mascara

This classic from the FM archives is our most popular interview ever. In it, skincare expert Caroline Hirons explains the right order to apply products and tells us how she really feels about “clean” beauty, INCI lists, the Environmental Working Group (EWG), the beauty-industry patriarchy, myths about pores, acid solutions, hyaluronic acid, and more. The interview originally aired in 2020. We’ll be back next week with a new and very special episode!

Caroline suggests applying products in this order (but, she warns, the order is still dependent on the formulas you’re using, so it’s best to consult an aesthetician if you’re unsure): oil or balm cleanser; creamy or foaming cleanser; acids/acid solutions; mists or essences; eye cream; serum (or any face oils that are humectants or have active ingredients); other face oils; moisturizer (but listen to the podcast, because Caroline agrees with us that oils with occlusives can go on last)
