Ep 63: Absurd Amounts of Makeup

June 2, 2017 Fat Mascara

Did you miss us during our week off? We missed you! But we're back with an awesome episode featuring beauty (and fashion) parodist Caroline Solomon, better known as @lowcheekbones. We are obsessed with her hilarious Instagram videos. (Jess loves the the one where she does a fashion show in a McDonald's, and Jenn is into her video about living on a propane tank with her YSL lip gloss.) During our discussion with Caroline, we lamented how concealer always creases and talked about the one from Tarte that everyone loves. We couldn't remember the name, but have since looked it up, and it's Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Aquacealer Concealer. And, yes, that is a ridiculous name, but it's a lovely full-coverage creamy concealer that's very flexible and doesn't get cakey.) In this episode, Jenn gifts Jess a copy of NEZ magazine and recaps what she learned about anosmia at Le Grand Musée du Parfum, in Paris. Jess shares a few (five to be exact) reasons to get a facial, and then the girls celebrate CVS's decision to stop selling all "sunscreens" with SPF values lower than 15. Below are the products, people, and things we mentioned in the podcast. As always, leave comments and questions below or hit us up on Twitter, Instagram, or directly: info@fatmascara.com.

The Streicher Sisters: Jen (makeup artist), Ashley (hairstylist), and Kristie (brow guru)

The Streicher Sisters: Jen (makeup artist), Ashley (hairstylist), and Kristie (brow guru)

We took our show on the road this episode! Our interview with The Streicher Sisters—LA's grooviest beauty trio—is on location at Blackberry Farm, Tennessee. We do a rapid-fire beauty roundtable, and there are enough tips and inspo to get you through Labor Day. (Please bear with the sound: Because we used a handheld, it wasn't exactly pristine.)

Before that, we chat apple cider vinegar rinses (yes, they're magic); the kooky facial fitness trend; and the latest in tattoo removal technology, including the DeScribe PFD Patch.

Have thoughts about the episode? An apple cider hair remedy you want to tell us about? A tattoo removal tale? Let us know in the comments below!

Fragrance fanatics, you've hit jackpot! This is one of our best-scented episodes yet: We have Elizabeth Musmanno, president of The Fragrance Foundation, in the house. Her recommendations are so unique, and her sensibility is so sharp, we think it's an interview you won't forget. (We didn't want the conversation to end, but we both had to go to work.)

Before our big interview...

We share the highlights from our Blackberry Farm trip with Mary Kay, talk about Martha Stewart's new beauty line—as Martha might say, "It's a good thing"—and talk chipped nail polish. Here's a link to the (now vintage) New York Times article Jess referenced about chipped nail polish: Consider it a companion piece to this podcast!

Enjoy this cosmic image

Do you believe in the whole "mercury-in-retrograde" thing? Well, we had a ton of scheduling snafus, so there might be something to it. : / We're guest-less this show, but there's plenty of beauty news to discuss!

On the agenda! Coachella's most questionable trend; nude lipstick that doesn't make you look like a corpse; and we ask the question that, frankly, needs to be asked: Are spa treatments the new therapy? This New York Times article says so. What do you think? Let us know in the comments section below!

Below are some of the products and peeps we mentioned:

Jerome Russell Wild Hair and Body Glitter
Scott Barnes Body Bling
Nars Body Glow
Charlotte Tilbury Supermodel Body
KKW x Kylie Lip Crémes

Episode 58: 50 Shades of Pink

April 21, 2017 Fat Mascara

Bonjour, nos amis! This week we have Violette (one name only, like Beyoncé—but French, and, um, a makeup artist, not an entertainer) in the studio, getting rebellious, sharing makeup tips, and talking about "sex hair," homeopathic skin drops, and eyeshadow that is "slowly dying." Listen and that will make sense. We also discuss toner and whether it's really adding anything to your life. Jury is still out but we would love to hear your thoughts (please commend below!). Plus, Gwyneth Paltrow says we should all be "earthing," and we agree but refuse to call it that. And, this week, you get a chance to win an epic fragrance gift basket: Just cast your vote in the Fragrance Foundation awards and after you submit your vote, click to tell your friends about it and tag @fatmascara when you post it to social. You guys ready to go deeeep? We were on this episode. Jess shared the story of her (two!) breast reductions, and the segment is a must-listen for anyone considering plastic surgery or just looking for some recognition that, yes, it totally sucks when you're living in a body that you're not happy with. We also chat about how awkward it is to tip at the hair salon, and then Jess reports the story of a fascinating character in the beauty world: Dr. Bronner. (Jury's still out on whether or not he's an actual doctor, but we learn some other deep, dark facts.) If you want to learn more about the brand, have a listen to Episode 469 of the WTF with Marc Maron podcast, where Marc interviews David Bronner. And, of course, there's the big interview!
