Episode 47: Warm and Fuzzy

February 2, 2017 Fat Mascara
Kim Paschen of Leaping Bunny

Kim Paschen of Leaping Bunny

This week, we cuddle up to Kim Paschen, communications manager for Leaping Bunny, a non-profit company that certifies cosmetics and household products as cruelty-free, based on a uniform set of standards. She explains that, yes, companies do still test on animals, and, yes, there are things you can do to be more informed and make more ethical beauty choices, if you so desire. Have a listen and give it a think—the bunnies (and mice and rats) will thank you.

Episode 46: Crazy Viral

January 28, 2017 Fat Mascara
manicurist Madeline Poole

manicurist Madeline Poole

Hey guys! We're talking about all things nails this week. So grab your favorite polish (FYI: This is Yazzy, the Fat Mascara intern, writing—and for me it's definitely Essie's Angora Cardi), and then get some advice from editorial nail artist extraordinaire and Sally Hansen Global Color Ambassador Madeline Poole, aka @mpnails. But first, we get inspired by the MAC Influencer Collection, due out in April 2017. Would you wear the Fat Mascara collaboration products we dreamed up—if we had a MAC collab, that is? We also offer some real talk on face oils: It took everyone a while to realize that putting oil on your face is a good thing, but now we want to make sure you're using them correctly and getting the full benefits. Last up, we talk about blorange. No, unfortunately that is not a dual album with Beyoncé + Solange (although that would be amazing). It's the hottest trend in hair color right now. See below for a list of the products mentioned during the show.

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate
Elemis Superfood Facial Oil
Dr. Jackson’s Face Oil
Sonya Dakar Organic Hoya Omega Booster

Episode 44: Jane Says

January 14, 2017 Fat Mascara
Jane Larkworthy

Jane Larkworthy

On this week's episode we have a very special guest: writer, editor, beauty director (and Jess's former boss!) Jane Larkworthy. She shares pearls of wisdom about her career and dishes on some of her favorite natural beauty products, how she became a foodie, and her most interesting celebrity interviews.

But before we dive into Jane's world, Janelle Monae's Golden Globes look inspired us to discuss hair accessories and how to pull them off in adulthood. We also ponder the reason Nordstrom is going a little bit green with their new Natural Beauty Outposts in 46 stores. Saving the personal topic for the end, we bring you nipple news: Areola and nipple reduction surgeries are on the rise...yeah, it's a thing.

Also, in case you didn't notice, we have two awesome companies sponsoring the show now! And, just so you guys know, when we started this podcast, we decided that we wouldn't bring on any sponsors that we wouldn't actually use and recommend ourselves—which means the word flanker will never be sponsoring our show 😂. But, seriously, we are so down with ThirdLove bras and underwear and HelloFresh meal-kit delivery service. Visit ThirdLove.com/mascara to try one of their insanely comfy bras for 30 days free (you just pay shipping). Or go to HelloFresh.com, register, sign up for one of the weekly meal plans, and use the promo code MASCARA to get $35 off. (So, for example, if you wanted to get three meals a week for two people, you would only pay $24.94 the first week. That's insane.)

Okay, enough about that. Here are the products and brands we mentioned on this week's show:

She takes us through her step-by-step process of drag and how drag has influenced today’s beauty industry.

Fragrance Goddess Jo Malone

Fragrance Goddess Jo Malone

Christmas came three weeks early: This week on the pod, we talk to fragrance legend, Jo Malone, founder of Jo Malone London and Jo Loves. This is one for the books. Settle in, light a candle, and relax -- it's a good one. (Also, her voice is so soothing.)

Before that: Why you should apply face cream below your face; is there a "right" age to start wearing makeup?; and a love letter to holiday candles.

Big news before anything! We now have an ~exclusive~ Facebook group JUST for Fat Mascara fans! Click on the link, and we will add you ASAP! It's your space to have your own post-show wrap up, ask questions, review products, and other beauty-related stuff! Our fab fan Anna started it, and we couldn't be more pleased. Episode 39: Popaholics

December 1, 2016 Fat Mascara
Dr. Sandra Lee

Dr. Sandra Lee

We've got a new main squeeze: It's Sandra Lee, MD, aka Dr. Pimple Poppper! This week we have her on to talk about her work as a dermatological surgeon and how she became the Queen of the Popaholics. If we inspired you to check out one of her videos, but you're scurred, then try the one below. It's not too squirty. (And, yes, you read that right: It has been viewed more than 22.9 million times.)

If you're still with us, then you'll also want to know the results of our Mascara Challenge. We tested ten of the top-selling drugstore mascaras of 2016 from Revlon, L'Oréal Paris, Maybelline, Almay, Neutrogena, NYX, Wet n' Wild, Physicians Formula, e.l.f., and Covergirl. Jess's top three were L'Oréal Paris Voluminous Original (faithful listeners will know that was no big surprise!), Revlon Ultimate All-in-One, and e.l.f. Beautifully Bare Lash Tint. Jenn liked NYX Double Stacked, Neutrogena Healthy Volume Waterproof, and Revlon Ultimate All-in-One.

We also praise these wise words from Shirley Manson and discuss how sanitary (or not) retail makeup testers are—and whether or not we like to use them. Other products mentioned on the pod are below.

Dr. Sandra Lee's go-tos (until her skincare line comes out):
Cortaid (the OTC topical steroid that she puts on a red pimple that has already been popped or doesn't have a head to pop)
Dr. Pimple Popper Comedone Extractor
Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser
Dove beauty bar
#raiseawand to Nars Blush in Sex Appeal
#raiseawand to Lip Pencil
(Jenn likes the ones from MAC, but Have to Have It, the shade she mentioned, was actually limited edition and is no longer available. There are plenty of other shades to choose from here.)

Episode 38: No Butts

Tattoo artist Virginia Elwood (photo by Time Out New York)

Yeah, so we called this episode "No Butts," but there is actually a lot of talk about butts. Just warning you! First up: Micellar waters. We fill you in on what micelles are, how these face-cleansing toner-type liquids became popular, and why we don't (and sometimes do) like them. Then it's on to a public health crisis. Bill Gates is working with fragrance maker Firmenich to create a scent with the power to block malodorous latrine smells so public toilets around the world are more pleasant (and used more often, to everyone's health benefits). And then we get all "magazine beauty editor" on you with our tips for taking your makeup from day to night for the holiday season.

The interview this week is with tattoo artist Virginia Elwood, co-owner of Saved Tattoo in Brooklyn and creator of It's For Me. She takes us behind the scenes of the tattoo world, from the one-handed biker who first inked her to the body part(s) she refuses to tattoo (see Episode Title 😂 ). Here are the products we talked about:

Bioderma
Simple Micellar Water
The only jasmine fragrance Jess likes: ALTAIA [A Long Time Ago In Argentina] Don't Cry For Me
SK-II Pitera Mid-Day Essence
Urban Decay Mascara Resurrection

This company crowd-sources ideas for new products and then has the public vote on the prototypes to decide which ones have enough interest to make it to market. Right now, they're working on Mission Brows, an eyebrow replacement product that looks like real eyebrow hairs. It's great for women who over-pluck—and even better for women who have lost their brows to cancer therapy. Find out more about the product here, and then vote to have it produced.
