EPISODE 33: SELF LOVERY

October 15, 2016 Fat Mascara
Orange is the New Black actress Dasha Polanco

Orange is the New Black actress Dasha Polanco

This week's episode is epic! We go from talking about wine and Beyoncé to a coffee Q&A with advice from the Lauders—both experiences that offered enlightenment. After that, we discuss how skincare companies over-hype botanical ingredients. Sure, many of nature's plants have topical benefits, but it doesn't work exactly how these brands claim. We explain. And you know all those stars who have been going makeup-free in public lately? While it may be true that they're not wearing color cosmetics, they have plenty of other little helpers they rely on. Our point: Non-celebrities shouldn't expect to look like barefaced Kim Kardashian at a Paris fashion show when they take off their makeup. Last but certainly not least, we have the amazingly talented and beautiful actress Dascha Polanco from Orange is the New Black and Joy on the show. She talks about her favorite beauty products, her strong beliefs on self-hygiene, and her #selflovery campaign. Oh, and you know we had to ask for details about the next season of OITNB (don't worry—no spoilers!). Below is a list of the products mentioned.

No Make-Up Secrets:

But once you do get the episode, you will be psyched! We have Beutycon CEO Moj Mahdara on to talk about the world's best beauty festival (don't you dare call it a conference), vloggers, content creators, and her personal brand of awesomeness. Jess also shares her thoughts on the NYC Beautycon, before Jenn tells us all about her awkward Americanisms that were on display during a recent visit to Portugal. Plus: Are you a puller? We discuss trichotillomania, which is especially appropriate considering it's International No Pulling Week. (Pulling is a Body-Focused Repetitive Behavior, and you can find out more about it here.) Finally, inspired by one of our favorite makeup artists, Lisa Eldridge, we share our pre-bedtime rituals for better beauty sleep. That 6 ft. Barbie we reference in this episode's title? It's Theo Kogan, makeup artist, mom, model, singer, songwriter, punk rocker, and founder of Armour Beauty. She gives us a great interview! Before that, we get into our favorite Olympic beauty looks and sound off on the doofuses who appeared on Fox to debate whether or not Olympians should wear makeup. Jenn—who is so not an Olympian—tries to figure out what to do about the bruises on her legs. And, finally, we talk about the difference between cosmetics and drugs, a discussion sparked by this New York Times article that reports on the continuing saga of Wen cleansing conditioner and the power the government may (or may not) have to act. If you want to learn more about cosmetic and drug safety and testing, we suggested you read about it on the FDA's site. And to our point about how some skin creams are probably drugs that get away with being marketed as cosmetics because they are very careful with their labeling and claims, check out this page. The products mentioned in the episode are below. And, as always, if you have any questions you can email us or comment on our Twitter or Instagram or Facebook page.
