EPISODE 13: UNICORN BALLS

Kat Von D, you are a FORCE

Kat Von D is the perfect podcast guest: She's crazy-smart, zero B.S., and funny, too. On this episode, Kat talks about bullies, refusing to compromise on cruelty-free beauty, and lip color that looks good on everyone.

But before that:

Fat Mascara goes to Washington! We took to the capital to celebrate Kiehl's 165th birthday and their support of the Smithsonian's Cosmetics and Personal Care Collections Digitization Project, which is INCREDIBLE: a museum specialist has photographed, ID'd, and described info for approximately 90,000 personal care and cosmetics objects in the Smithsonian's massive online "beauty" museum, which anyone can peruse online. We strongly urge any beauty obsessive or history buff to check it out, but be warned: It's kind of addicting! We geeked out when we saw some of the products in person, and we talk about some of our favorites on the show. For example, Outdoor Girl Face Powder and this ad for deodorant soap, which was really sad and demented ("The Lonely Mrs. K").

Then, Jenn reveals her shocking acne fix. We don't want to give it away, but you might need this. Or something similar and maybe not as expensive. Just listen—as usual, Jenn has a cool study to back it up!

And let's keep our eye on Calvin Klein, shall we? They just announced the launch of the (drop dead sexy) Deep Euphoria. Combined with their most recent gender-fluid fragrance and the brouhaha over the upskirt shots and vaginal-grapefuit denim ads, Jess feels like CK may be coming home to their weird, sexy roots. Hallelujah, bc if they're not, we're all doomed.

We talked about a lot of products on this episode. Here's a shopping list:

Restorsea Pro All Day Every Day Lotion 3x

Tata Harper Irritability Treatment

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick

Kat Von D Metal Crush Eyeshadow

Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Foundation

Anna Sui Cosmetics

Yomi Abiola, photographed by Kalle Gustafsson, Italian Vogue

Yomi Abiola, photographed by Kalle Gustafsson, Italian Vogue

Yomi! We fell in love with this model, journalist and activist a few years ago on a press trip to Ghana, where she cracked us up with her hilarious/cutting truth bombs. Now THIS was a model with could hang with! On Fat Mascara, she gets real about modeling, diversity, beauty, and trying to bring social accountability to fashion. And products, of course.

Visit her website, YomiAbiola.com, as well as  thefemleague.com , the women's media platform she founded.

Check out her latest story in Italian Vogue.

Follow her on Twitter at @yomiabiola

Before that, we swap spa stories (Jenn's Floating Lotus experience is pretty trippy). Then, a moment for Prince and Bowie: They had the balls to wear makeup but were still the hottest guys in the room. Then, we answer our first listener question—we love the engagement, guys. This one is about concealer—just in time for allergy season.

EPISODE 8: 44 MOTORCYCLES & A LAMBORGHINI

Chris Salgardo, Kiehl's USA President

Chris Salgardo, Kiehl's USA President

We are honored—and humbled—to welcome Chris Salgardo, the president of Kiehl's USA and author of the new book, Manmade. Not only does he ensure that one of the oldest beauty brands in the world is still one of the coolest and most cutting-edge (Kiehl's, est. 1851!), but he is someone who actually puts himself on the line when it comes to philanthropy. He is not writing checks behind a desk; he is getting his butt on a motorcycle and riding to raise money for the causes that move him. That, and so many other charity initiatives he has done under Kiehl's.

If Fat Mascara ever goes corporate, let it be in Chris Salgardo style.

But before that...

Let's talk Coachella: Festival season is upon us, and there are too many headdresses and bindis to count. Is cultural misappropriation killing your buzz, too? Or are we being too harsh? Tweet us, email us, let us know.

Bikini waxing: Jess had a discussion with a friend that had us all Women's Studies 101. Do we have to wax? Is bikini hair removal an option, or sort of a cultural obligation, like shaving your legs?

The Oscars of Fragrance: The Fragrance Foundation Awards are coming up in June—did we mention Alec Baldwin is hosting?—and while most of the categories are voted on by The Industry, the rest of us can vote on the Consumer Choice Awards! Yes! Should Ariana Grande go home with an award? Does victory belong to V.S.? Was Johnny Depp's work for Dior for naught? Use your vote!

We are such fragrance-obsessives that we want to celebrate this season by *GIVING AWAY* a selection of the nominated fragrances.* (Big thanks to The Fragrance Foundation for making this happen!)

Vote online, and—THIS IS IMPORTANT!—at the end of the super-quick form, "SHARE" your vote via Twitter, and make sure to tag us @fatmascara . That way, you will be entered to win!

Again:

1) Go to fragrance.org/vote to cast your voice

2) Make your picks (it literally takes less than two minutes)

3) At the end of the form, share your vote via Twitter, and add " @fatmascara " so we can find you and enter your name into our glamorous giveaway! Win this, and expect to smell amazing for years to come...

The nominees...

EPISODE 7: GIRL TALK

The beautiful Deborah Lippmann, nail artist + jazz singer

The beautiful Deborah Lippmann, nail artist + jazz singer

We are busy ladies, so we couldn't get the full episode recap and pictures of us with perms up just yet (which is probably a good thing). But, in the meantime (as promised on the episode), here's a list of the collagen supplements that are actually proven to improve collagen levels in skin and reduce wrinkles and/or skin roughness. The ones that appear to be the most effective are at the top:

The products that contain Verisol:
1. Lindberg Skin Rejuvenator
2. Reserveage Collagen Replenish Powder
3. Swanson Beauty Drink Mix with Verisol
Also, some others that definitely improve skin:
4. BioSil (The one Christie Brinkley uses that our listener asked about)
5. BioCell Collagen

EPISODE 6: FAKE IT 'TIL YOU MAKE IT

Michael Gordon, founder of Hairstory and Bumble & bumble

Michael Gordon, founder of Hairstory and Bumble & bumble

This week on the podcast: Michael Gordon, the man who basically invented artfully-mussed hair. The founder of Bumble and bumble, he sold the biz (um, baller! $$$) to Esteé Lauder Companies only to go off and create the next cool New York-based hair brand: Hairstory, part-hair studio, part-web channel, part-haircare line. Check out the products below: You will find one that will make three of the products you own obsolete.

And if you're a creative type, starting your own business, or slightly lost, listen closely: Michael has some sage advice for you.

But before MG hits the stage, Jess reveals the new products that are rocking her world. (One costs less than a Subway sandwich yet SCREAMS glamour.)

Also, we recap the American Society for Plastic Surgery's 2015 report (butt lift, anyone?), and talk about the (grossly) underrated powers of makeup.

We mention a LOT of great products in this episode. Here they are. Let us know what you love!

Hairstory New Wash

Hairstory Hair Balm

Hairstory Dressed Up

Hairstory Undressed

The Beachwaver

Dior Diorshow Fusion Mono in Météore

L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Mascara ("With the curved brush!" - JM)

Charlotte Tilbury Hot Lips Lipsticks - Coming this summer!

EPISODE 5: BRUSHES LIKE BUTTER

Makeup genius Daniel Martin

Makeup genius Daniel Martin

Daniel Martin! We're obsessed with this man. The makeup artist—who works with Tatcha Beauty, The Honest Company and Dior Beauty (um, excuse us!)—took a break from making up celeb clients Jessica Alba, Olivia Palermo, Chloe Sevigny, Kirsten Dunst, Julianne Moore, and a host of other amazing ladies to hang with us! He taught us beauty tips we never knew (including why our foundation fails by 4pm) and showed us what's in his magic bag of meds (see left).

Also, did you know he was on Dawson's Creek? Yeah, we talk about that, too.

Before that, Jenn and Jess spring clean their makeup brushes with magical Parian Spirit, learn about halal beauty, and rate producer Vicky's latest shady online beauty purchase. $6 for a face roller?

Have a listen, and check out these product links for reference. PS, that Dr. Jart roller is totally worth it (according to Jess).

- Sephora The Natural Citrus Brush Cleaner  - makes brushes smell like orange juice and dries quickly! Seriously, clean your brushes.

- NailsInc - pioneers in the halal beauty world. Expect other nail polish companies to be taking their cues from this Brit brand soon.

- The Dr Jart Liftra Contour Shaper - this tool is serious. Rotating balls, heavy chrome, firm grip. Really, check out the specs on Sephora.

- Troy Surratt's gorgeous line, including is BRUSHES LIKE BUTTER!

- Tatcha Kyoto Red Silk Lipstick - Daniel created this for Tatcha! It's the most gorgeous regal red, and it's inspired by Chloe Sevigny (who looks freaking KILLER in red). Chloe actually wore this to The Met Ball. You will feel like a freaking BOSS wearing this.

What Daniel uses on his ageless face:

- Tatcha Indigo Line - Daniel has eczema but you wouldn't know it from looking at him. Maybe it's because he uses this stuff? The Indigo line is all about soothing...

- Paula's Choice

- Dr Alkaitis

EPISODE 4: 21ST CENTURY ROSE

Author Chandler Burr, a "curator of olfactory art."

Author Chandler Burr, a "curator of olfactory art."

We beauty-geeked out this week! Our convo with Chandler Burr was nearly an hour long, so we edited it down to give you the highlights—and there were many. The biggest news: He's working on a perfume called You Or Someone Like You (named for his book) with perfumer Caroline Sabass at Givaudan. We definitely want to have him back on the show again when the perfume launches in late 2016.

Jess recently appeared at The Asia Society's K-Beauty Show, a panel discussion on the world of Korean beauty products (see video below). She shared what she learned and we discussed how we're a bit freaked out by the way K-beauty seems to encourage women to strive for unattainable beauty goals (uh, 12-year-old baby skin). Case in point: Etude House's Golden Ratio powder, which is no longer available (although the company still makes Golden Ratio Face Glam).

This Goop article inspired us to talked about "intentionally charged" beauty products from brands like Shiva Rose, De Mamiel, Sodashi, and Soli Davis, the facialist Jess would "follow of a bridge."

For our new segment on gross stuff—which needs a name, send us suggestions here—we stepped into the world of Dr. Pimple Popper and watched this blackhead removal video. (To spare those of you who are totally freaked out by pimple porn, we're not imbedding the video in this blog post. You're welcome.)

Here are the brands and products that were mentioned during the episode: Peach & Lilly, the online source for all things K-beauty; Too Cool For School's Dinoplatz makeup line; the perfumes Quartz by Molyneux and Osmanthe Yunnan by Hermès; and The Art Of Scent 1889-2012 Exhibition Catalogue, Chandler's amazeballs "perfume compendium" from Lucky Scent that features fragrances such as Drakkar Noir by perfumer Pierre Wargnye, Angel by perfumers Olivier Cresp and Yves de Chirin, and Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue by perfumer Olivier Cresp.
